The Wedding Journey by Carla Kelly reviewed by Lola Sparks Ordinary characters in extraordinary circumstances. I'm sure you've heard it before, especially when talking about a Carla Kelly novel. The Wedding Journey upholds that tradition. Nell Mason's father is about to marry her off to his creditor to settle his debts. Before he can, Jesse Randall, who has silently loved Nell for years, steps in and weds her himself. They have worked side by side in the same marching hospital for years, Nell seemingly never having a clue as to the depth of Jesse's love for her. Their marriage is a hasty one and is challenged from the beginning. They certainly never expect for their hospital to be left behind when the regiment is retreating. Nor do they expect to find themselves stuck with thieves as companions. Through every trying thing they encounter, be it a childbirth gone wrong, or an insane lord intent on keeping Nell locked in a tower, Jesse and Nell persevere. Their affection and love deepen on every step of the journey. What I respect and enjoyed most about this novel is the lack of petty jealousies. It's something I see far too much of when reading romances. To not have Jesse and Nell questioning every member of the opposite sex who comes near their beloved was refreshing. Nell is a smart cookie, but also vulnerable. Jesse is a competent surgeon, but also shy. Each comes into their own in the course of this journey, and each comes to discover what a blessing they have found in the other. They've always been a part of each other's lives, it seems, but who would have guessed it would turn to love? None of the characters in The Wedding Journey are perfect--oh how I loved Harper and Wilkie! I adore characters who turn out to be more than they seem...but don't turn out to be super-characters. I don't want a perfectly polished prince in my books. I like ragged ruffians, and beards that itch, and skirts that get weighed down with mud and blood and who knows what else. I like reality with the romance, and Carla Kelly gives me that in droves. What a fabulous adventure and tender love story you'll find in The Wedding Journey. Brava, Ms. Kelly, brava!
