My Lord Pirate by Laura Renken
Historical romance (1690 Jamaica)
reviewed by Anna C. Bowling

Laura Renken more than delivers the goods in My Lord Pirate, the first of a series of seafaring romances, and a Golden Heart award finalist. One of the launch titles for Jove's new Seduction line of historicals, this book is a return to the swashbuckling adventures reminiscent of the classic pirate novels of years ago.

Would-be nun Regan Welles is thrust into adventure when a mysterious man kidnaps, her, mistaking her for her cousin, Arabella. Keeping her wits about her Regan takes charge of her situation. She isn't Harrison Kendrick's fiancee, but she is his stepsister, and thus still fits into the plan of Talon Drake, a man bent on revenge for his family's destruction.

Talon, accused of treason, and reeling from the brutal deaths of his parents, and apparent death of his sister, hits the high seas with a single-minded passion. He will bring down those responsible for his family's destruction, starting with Harrison Kendrick, a lieutenant governor of Jamaica.

Though fast losing her heart to Talon and his crew, Regan keeps her identity secret, allowing the misconception to continue. Only when they are thrust back into reality does the truth come to light, driving the couple apart just when they need each other the most. Talon and Regan clash, love, fight and become each other's perfect complement. It is this that ensures our happy ending, with Regan's quick wit pairing with Talon's determination to save the day.

An engaging cast of secondary characters peppers the stew. From the strongly charismatic Marcus (who will be the hero of the series next book) to sprightly Parrot and not-what-she-seems Sarah, each character comes fully alive, preparing a vivid picture in the reader's mind.
